Barefooted, the plush hallway carpet pushes between my toes and ten steps further I am walking on the cool ceramic tile of the kitchen floor. The deck is just off the kitchen through a set of French doors. The robins and blue jays bid me good morning in song as they fight for position at the suet feeder hanging from a shepherd’s hook outside.
I open the creaky cupboard door and grab for my favorite mug. Dropping in the Breakfast Blend Extra Bold K-Cup into my Keurig, I take a moment to savor the aroma of my morning coffee. I press the mug to my lips, and sip carefully so not to burn my tongue. Cradling my mug, I make my way back to the bedroom closet to select my outfit for this lazy Saturday.
I love my walk-in closet. It is so large; I am able to store clothes for each season. On the left side hang my t-shirts, blouses, dresses and sweaters. On the right side hang my shorts, jeans, dress pants and skirts. As I push through the uniform wooden hangers, I grab a soft t-shirt and my favorite ripped jeans and head for the shower.
I am the type of person who loves a hot shower. Not scalding hot, but muscle-relaxing hot. Hot enough to steam up the twelve-by-ten-foot room in just ten minutes. I reach for one of my extra-large bath towels from the towel rack. They are not only absorbent, but also luxurious.
Back to the kitchen, I crack two eggs into a metal bowl, and with a tablespoon of milk and a few shakes of black pepper, I whip them together with a wire whisk. As the pan heats on the stovetop I drop in a pat of butter, for extra flavor, before I add the eggs. I reach for one slice of whole-grain wheat bread and place it into one of two slots in the toaster. I never worry about the setting on the toaster as the scent alone tells me when it is perfectly toasted.
I plate my meal and decide to eat breakfast at the glass table on the deck. The fluffy eggs melt in my mouth and the only things I chew are crunchy bites of lightly buttered toast. As the coffee cools, I am able to take in more than tiny sips. I relax into the chair and drink in the warmth of the sun upon my face on this beautiful spring morning.
After breakfast and during my second cup of coffee, I bow my head and begin my morning devotions with a prayer, “Father, thank you for allowing me to hear your voice as birdsong, to smell your aromatic cologne by way of Hyacinth and to feel your warmth on my face in the morning sun. Thank you for allowing me to taste your goodness in this meal. Although I am blind, I can see you with the eyes of my heart and I love you and thank you for the many, many blessings you shower upon me every day. Thank you, Lord. Amen.”
