It tumbles over itself, a toddler in joyful, perpetual motion, exploring its new world with verve, feeding its banks with verdant life. then settles into a more graceful, tranquil pace, gaining power and momentum, widening and strengthening.
Sometimes it enters a turbulent phase. Adversity, grief, and loss are mighty boulders and steep declines, over which its life becomes a frenetic search for the stability of nothingness. Diving, crashing, throwing up white plumes of fear and anger, out of control, full of malignant fury, it threatens anyone in its path until with the application of the balm of time, it recomposes itself and flows again in serene majesty, with banks full of trees and herons and ospreys and towns and cities feeding from its bosom.
Now near its journey’s end the river can taste the salt of the ocean’s beckoning grace. It divides itself, bayous, estuaries, formed from the rich deposit of its alluvial accumulation, the wisdom of its well lived life, a legacy of fulfilled promises, a life that gives life to all it enriches. Into the vast ocean it empties itself to live again, in tides and waves and clouds and rain. Its life is over. Now it truly begins.
