above a cherub face,
so still, so very still.
We lean in close to hear
a gentle breath of life,
so sweet, so very sweet.
This tiny life is dear
beyond all that we've known,
so real, so very real.
For nothing could prepare,
and nothing can compare
with the blessedness we share
of this one in our care.
This tiny beating heart
pumps a special rhythm
for life, for very life.
Her chest goes up and down
near imperceptibly,
each breath, each little breath.
We stand and watch with awe
so very thankfully,
with joy, with grateful joy.
For He who makes us breathe,
whose arms are underneath,
a constant watch will keep
in her waking and her sleep.
This miracle of life,
beyond our human ken,
God's work, God's wondrous work.
Our tiny baby girl,
So intricate and sweet,
Asleep, safely asleep.
And just how can it be
such creativity,
awesome complexity,
displayed in new humanity?
