Before stepping over the threshold from the bright sunlight into the dimly lit darkness of the prison, Silas prepared himself for the expected shock to his eyes as they adjusted and the offensive smell to his nose.

While waiting, he called out, “Markus! I hear we received some new, out-of-town guests today. I can’t wait to hear if the scuttlebutt I’ve been hearing about them is true.”

A jesting voice then rang out from the darkness, “Titus, you dog! You’re late! Now my wife is going to eat me alive for being late too.”

With his eyes now adjusted, he moved toward Markus’ voice. “How would I know what you’ve heard? Now get in here so I can debrief you and get home to the wife!”

After Markus left, Titus obsessively kept reviewing in his mind what he had told him about their new prisoners, and what brought them to his prison.

The one called Paul had tired of the continuing daily mockery of a well-known slave girl who could predict the future. She had followed them around, continually harassing them for several days, when Paul finally snapped. He spun around, pointed his finger at her, and then in the name of who must be his God, demanded the spirit in her to come out. And it did!

It must have … for witnesses tell how her face and demeanor shockingly changed in an instant. Plus she could no longer foretell the future.

Her owner was of course furious, for the flow of money he had been making off her “gift” also disappeared with the spirit. Poof! Gone. Just like that, a major part of his income … dried up in an instant.

But it got even worse, for Paul and his companion when her owner got the whole market place riled up against them—literally having them dragged before the magistrate where he claimed all kind of things against them. They were then beaten with rods within an inch of their lives, and then sent here where they’re now in a cell with their feet in stocks.

What a mess! he thought to himself. But the thing he couldn’t seem to shake was the feeling he got when hearing what happened when Paul used the name of His God. A spirit had obeyed him!

Titus kept shaking his head at the mental image he had of that moment, for a question seemed to keep haunting him: What kind of God, and man, had control like that over the spirit world?! The thought intrigued him, but it also scared him.

An unusual sound suddenly interrupted his troubling thoughts. He couldn’t quite identify it. Was it singing? He asked himself in amazement. It slowly started getting louder. He kept straining to hear better. It was! Two voices were singing. “Here in my prison?” he whispered incredulously to himself.

Titus was already having trouble making sense of it all when the building began to shake. He jumped up from the table. Bars and chains shook with a deafening rattle and banging, and then he heard strange, sharp and loud snapping sounds. As he stared at the dust and debris that was falling from the ceiling, he began wondering, Is this the day I’m going to die?

Then suddenly everything stopped, replaced with an eerie silence. Titus found his knees shaking so bad he could hardly stand. But giving himself a mental kick, he shakingly started shuffling toward the cells for he needed to check on his prisoners.

He gasped when he saw twisted bars and empty cells, shackles and stocks. Titus was horrified. Knowing escaped prisoners meant death to the one guarding them, he drew his sword to kill himself, for he believed that was the only honorable thing he could do. As he started to position it point up, so he could fall on it, a voice rang out.

“Stop! Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!” Startled, Titus loosened his grip and his sword hit the stone floor with a loud clang.

He watched as they one by one stepped out of the darkness so he could see they were all there. It was then he also saw why they were free. His jaw dropped in astonishment as he dropped to his knees. He suddenly realized the miracle that happened with each strange snap he heard. Each iron holding bar, lock and shackle had been cleanly snapped in two!

It is a particular favorite genre of mine when familiar biblical stories are brought to life. You did an excellent job of bringing this familiar story to life. One small comment: I found it jarring when you used the modern word “debrief” and it temporarily took me out of the story. As I said, that was minor and overall superb job.

You did a nice job with this. You grabbed my attention and held it until the end.
