We all have experienced a man or woman standing near a freeway or off ramp begging for a free handout. Many hold up signs designed to get immediate satisfaction while trying to make you perhaps feel a bit guilty for not helping them.
The following are just some of my thoughts on the subject which are by no means exhaustive.
Hopefully, it will get you thinking about this serious problem and what we as Christians should do about it or how we should think about the problem.
Most of the homeless beggars I would venture are people with alcohol, cigarette or drug addictions. These people unwisely, more often than not, have burned their bridges with family and friends and their former employers.
As is often the case they acquired an entitlement mentality over the years because they've been on government assistance for too long and they've forgot what God requires and that is WORK! But who will hire a man or woman who is an addict or who is impossible to get along with?
Yes, I've made some judgments here...AND I hear somebody quoting the Bible out of context where it says: "Judge not lest ye be judged." FYI Jesus isn't forbidding all judgment in this verse or else he would be contradicting Himself because in another passage He commands us to "judge with righteous judgment." Look it up in John 7:24.
Righteous judgment is judging according to what is right or correct. To all who feel inclined to give these people cash or money be advised you are helping these addicts destroy their lives faster with each dollar you give because cigarettes and drugs kills as well as alcohol which by the way is also a drug.
None of these are conducive to good health. Somebody said give them a pair of socks. That is good judgment. Help them get sober and find a job. That's another good thing.
For those giving out of a sense of guilt think on this: Are you giving for the right reason? Give because you have love in your heart. Give to a local charity designed to help these poor souls help themselves.
You see giving money eases the conscience of those who feel guilty for their not giving. It might make you feel better but it doesn't truly help the homeless/beggar solve his/her problem. These people really need God and a job to support themselves but why work when the government gives out "free stimulus money?" The Psalmist David said in Psalm 84:11 "No good thing will He withhold from them who walk uprightly. What does that mean? NOTE: Walking with God suggests fellowship and closeness to God. This is a cause for all of us to examine ourselves.
We, too, can walk with God in this sense of the word (1John 1: 5-7), but to do so, we must walk in the manner that God instructs—- uprightly, not in the way of evil (Proverbs 4:14; 1John 3:8-9). It means not stealing, killing or having sex out of marriage and much more.
The apostle Paul taught "If a man doesn't work neither should he eat." How many of these homeless beggars are willing to work for what they get?
