Troubling Spirit

After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.” John 13:21 NIV

There is much that was probably troubling our Lord’s spirit at this time. His time with these men whom He loved dearly was almost over. His time to provide teaching to this world was nearing an end. I am sure He was also troubled about the upcoming torture He would endure.

Here, though, what I wish to focus on is the troubling of His spirit that one of those whom He had chosen was going to betray Him. Jesus knew what was in the heart of Judas Iscariot. Yet Jesus loved Him just like the rest of the disciples. He knew that Judas would be lost forever, cast out of the Father and Son’s presence forever, and I am sure this truly bothered our Lord. Each soul is precious to God and He wants all to come to Him. God loves each of us more than we could ever imagine.
