"Sir," they said, "always give us this bread." John 6:34 NIV
Here we have what appears to be a sense of reverence of some of the people that surrounded our Lord. It seems to parallel the Samaritan woman who said to Jesus “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” (John 4:15). In both situations those who asked did not truly understand that which was being offered. They were thinking of physical nourishment for the body while our Lord was speaking about spiritual nourishment. It is easy to understand why they did think the way that they did. No one had ever spoken like this before. This man was so different from any who had come before him.
I wonder how often today are we like the Samaritan woman and the crowd here and do not fully understand what our Lord says to us. May we allow the Holy Spirit, indwelling us, to enlighten us to the full understanding of all that Jesus Christ says to us. Let the Spirit direct you in the Lord’s ways.
