You will need a pen and one container of Play-Doh or Softee Dough for this exercise. Seriously.
Instructions
Imagine that you are the Creator of the world (Genesis 1:1). Pretend that you spoke or breathed it into existence. Act like you looked at it, realized that it was good, and then felt like something was missing: people. Ask yourself why you would want to fill your world with people if you were the Creator. Why would you want to have these tiny figures around you?
One reason that you may want these little figures around you is so you can love them and extend your infinite affections to them. Because you are such a magnificent Creator, you may also want these tiny figures to see your works, marvel at you, praise you, communicate with you, and adore you. You may want to be the topic of conversation amongst all of your little figures, as well. Are those unreasonable things to desire from the figures that you created--for yourself?
[Grab your Play-Doh and make some Play-Doh people. Don't worry about their imperfections or what they look like. In fact, make them imperfect on purpose so that they can come to you for repairs.]
You will have to give your figures some of your attributes so that they will be at least semi-capable of loving you and performing all of the other above-stated actions. You will have to make them somewhat like you but not even close to equal.
But Uh-Oh
What if your figures one day start thinking that they created themselves? What if they start thinking they can beat you, blaspheme you, and erase you from existence? What if they start walking away from you, making obscene gestures to you, and worshiping other figures that you created? How will you feel as the Creator of these figures? Hurt? Angry? Regretful? What will you want to do to your figures? What will you actually do to your figures?
A. Smash them and put the Play-Doh away.
B. Crush them and set the Play-Doh ablaze.
C. Try to re-shape them if they stop squirming long enough.
D. Leave the defective ones alone and just make new Play-Doh people.
E. Grieve over the loss of their hearts and continue to love them from afar.
F. Give them a spanking.
G. Reward them.
H. Remove your shield and let them fall on their faces.
I. All of the above
J. None of the above
K. No entiendo!
L. This is stupid!
M. There’s no God!
N. Play-Doh stinks!
O. Oh, I get it now!
God shows us who He is by allowing us to have certain abilities and relationships in our lives on Earth. Our marriages represent the Holy union between us and Him (Isaiah 54:5 KJV). The way that we relate to our children represents His relationship to us as our divine parent. Even our love and sensitivity toward our artwork explains something about God. What happens is that sin always tarnishes the beauty and the purity of such Earthly relations and relationships. They are never perfect, but they do teach us quite a bit about who our Creator is. They prepare us for what eternity has in store for us, as well.
