Ideas are living breathing thoughts that give inspiration to human action. You see, the actions we take tomorrow will be determined by the attitudes we have today.

One of the most fundamental concepts throughout the study of intellectual history is the statement that IDEAS HAVE CONSEQUENCES.

Ideas are older than men and nations. Men and nations will come and go but ideas will still be around. It is important, therefore, to understand ideas and their consequences or their implications for a nation and for a people. This is why a study of philosophy is so important, going back to ancient philosophy, right on through modern philosophy.

The men that came up with certain concepts and ideas were thinkers who tried to understand the spirit of the age in which they lived. They came up with an analysis or critique of movements, of inventions, of doctrine.

In fact, you can take a particular era, let's call it the era of reform(so called by the historian Henry Steele Commager) and study the abolition movement, the women's movement, the various reform movements that existed in the 1800's at Senecca Falls with Dorthea Dix. You can study these movements in terms of a particular philosphy.

Now everybody has a philosophy whether they realize it or not. The atheist no less. He believes that God doesn't exist. He thinks and speaks in terms of his presuppositions. He can't prove that God doesn't exist but he takes it as a presupposition for all argument.

The Christian, on the other hand, believes that all things rest upon this idea that God exists. He doesn't prove it either. It's a faith no less than that of the atheist.
