your strength and courage
as you faced all the hard times you went through.
I recognized how smart and resourceful you were,
and I loved your sense of humor.
If you only knew
how much I looked up to you.
I will always remember
your willingness to watch out for your family
or help out a neighbor,
how you worked hard
and led by example.
How I valued these traits about you.
And as a man of few words,
you said what you meant,
and you meant what you said.
If you only knew
how much I looked up to you.
If I have one regret, Dad,
it’s while you were here,
perhaps you never knew
how much I looked up to you.
But then I tell myself,
while you no longer live on earth,
I’m grateful you live on,
that I’ll see you again one day.
I’ll tell you then,
and it will be as if
you always knew
how much I looked up to you.
