He wondered what in the world that could mean. He knew about sin. His dad had told him that it was when he did something bad, like fighting with the neighbor boy or telling a lie about how many cookies he’d sneaked from the cookie jar.
And he knew about knots, too. He and his cousin Billy could tie lots of different knots with string, and Dad always tied the knot of his necktie for him when he got all dressed up.
Another kind of knot he knew was the kind he got on his leg when he ran into the coffee table when he was running in the den. Once when he fell off his skateboard, he got a big knot on his head. It hurt a whole lot, and he had to lie down and be still for a long time. He wondered if sin made knots in places where other people could see them or where they didn't show, like when he had a stomach ache and it hurt bad, but nobody could see it.
As soon as they got in the car to go home after church, Jimmy said, “Dad, what is a sin knot?”
He saw his dad smile at his mom before he answered. “Son, the 'sin not’ the preacher was talking about isn't a knot, like you're thinking. It is a command not to sin. He was reading from the King James Bible, and Ephesians 4, verse 26 says, ‘Be ye angry and sin not.’ That means, ‘Don’t do something bad when you get mad.’ You are not to act up and do things you know are wrong, like shout and stamp your feet or sass your mom or say bad words or even try to get even when someone does something that hurts you.
When you feel like your temper is going to make you do things you know you shouldn’t, just say a little prayer, and God will help you not to sin. Do you understand now?”
“Yeah, Dad, and I’m sure glad, I don’t get knots whenever I do something bad.”
