Hearing her mom’s footsteps made her heart pound in her throat.
Outside the closet door, mom’s hands poised upon her hips,
Ignoring mom’s summoning, little hands shushed quivering lips.
Her sisters didn’t seem to mind the ritual which made her cry,
They even seemed to like it, but she did not understand why.
Then a voice of rescue gently called to her little niece,
It was then the child got brave and cracked the door, just a piece.
To her mouth she put a finger urging “Auntie” to be quiet,
She whispered, “Mom’s gonna drown me,” but the aunt just wouldn’t buy it.
Wide eyes filled with tears, “It’s true and I beg her not to do it.”
“But every single Saturday, she always puts me through it.”
“Face forward in the bathroom sink she pushes down my head
Till it’s underneath the faucet and then comes the part I dread.”
“The soapy water stings my eyes even though I keep ‘em closed
And in between my fight for air, water goes up in my nose.”
Now mom, who was out of sight overheard her anxious child
Describe the shampoo ritual as something cruel and wild.
The aunt took her niece’s hand and knew the right solution,
“Let’s put you in a chair like the beauty institutions.”
With head laid backwards in the sink water flowed o’er golden curls,
And suds stayed clear of eyes and nose, no more drowning little girl.
So from that day forward shampoo struggles finally ceased--
When we look for solutions, we usually can find peace.
