Half a dozen voices chorused, "Yes Ma'am!"
"Good! Then let's keep moving. We're almost to camp; only a few more hours."
A few minutes passed as the children chattered among themselves. Each one’s voice chiming in louder over the previous, each one filled with the excitement of what the coming week was to hold.
"I hear there's this zip-line..."
"I can't wait..."
"...horseback riding!"
"Mom?" A strangled voice emerged over the dim.
"Yes sweets?"
"I...I-need-to-go!" The words blurred together to create a new word.
"Did you not just go?"
"Yeah...but I gotta go again!"
Six pairs of eyes turned at once to gaze at the unfortunate victim. And the boy squirmed uncomfortably, his bladder aching.
Five eyes exchanged looks, the vultures circling the kill. The boy had broken the Unspoken Rule of Road Trips. Never admit you need to go. Like lightening, the idea flashed between the five, and a slow smirk crossed their lips.
"Say, did y'all know that the 70% of the human body is made up of water?"
"Really? I didn't know that. Please tell me more..."
"Drip..."
"I've got a river of life flowing out of me..."
"...And the flush toilet existed as far back as 2,000 BC?"
"Drip..."
"Splish-Splash!"
"Sweets, as soon as we can, we'll stop for you."
The boy squirmed more, desperately trying to block out the sounds of the taunting voices. He hadn't meant to break the Unspoken Rule of Road Trips. Well, maybe he had. But he really had to go!
"Oh! I have the perfect thing that will help!" His older sister spoke up and he stared in disbelief as she cracked open her Bible and carefully began to read. "He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water." She paused and made eye contact with her brother with a grin. "Can we all meditate on this scripture?"
"Drip!"
"Spring up a well..."
"The highest waterfall in the world is..."
The boy clasped his hands over his ears as each voice washed over him like waves upon the beach.
But, redemption was neigh. The van was pulling into the parking lot. But his tormentors pressed on, sensing that this had to be their finest moments.
"Ni-AG-ara FaLlS!"
The door swung open, and the boy bolted out of the van before it came to a stop.
"Yeah...that's what this van was going to be if we hadn’t stopped."
