tethered within the vise,
feathers ripped from wings against night’s breeze,
the breath of squalls from sea,
thunderstorms, blowing leaves, twigs stumbling and trees,
old oaks mangled, skeletons, and deep holes,
the Bottom’s den, large anchors, rope knots and root,
cinders, coal, and fire, snarls the Dark
and barks,
huddled beneath stars, suns unseen, zenith-hid globes, and the weakness of the Reaching,
dreaming,
blind and bound,
still,
tethered within the vise
to the barking
of the
Dark,
sunrise,
yoked oxen drag gradually, warped wheels, timber burdened carts,
slowly, and less slowly,
from the bottom of a high sandy hill,
the rattled-snake coils on the path and hisses and spits,
or readies venom,
fangs glistening,
the sharp tailed scorpion, the spider, the furry bobcat, and scorching heat,
weapons there, militias, foes, mobs, war,
spy the sandy hill, the heavy breathing, the yokes, no master, as many try,
no listening,
the difference,
off the hill,
in the cool of the mount,
is Light, is Sight, is Sound,
Reach for me
Be tethered no more,
free from the vise,
and the barking
of the
dark
