He endured. When they used their fists, he endured. When they whipped him, he endured. When they put the crown of thorns on his head, he endured. Whatever they did to him, he endured…
“There’s no way out of here!” People were running in all sorts of directions, but all Bill could do was concern himself with his wife and his children. They were all that mattered. It was their safety that was paramount. His eyes darted back and forth as he tried to come up with a plan, any plan, that could help them get out of this. His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of his wife’s voice.
“Bill?”
He turned and looked at her. She was holding the youngest, Mary, who was crying, no doubt shaken from the sound of all the people. People running. People screaming. Bill did his best to smile at his wife, then turned his attention to the chaos outside the window. The hail was falling almost nonstop. Flames of fire hit the streets below. Not just the streets, but the cars, the buildings, the…people. Nothing and no one was safe. He turned back to his wife, and, reaching past the two children who were huddled with them, touched her on the shoulder. “It’ll be okay, Sarah.”
The disbelief on her face said it all. “How?”
“I don’t know, I just believe it will.”
The wood was hard. Heavy. He carried the weight on his shoulders. Still he endured. The people shook their fists as they spit on him. He remained silent. He burdened the load.
The hail stopped. “We go. Now.”
Sarah couldn’t believe her ears. “Out there?”
Bill gathered his son in his arms and stood up. “It’s our only chance.”
Sarah, in blind obedience, stood up, holding desperately onto her daughter. “But…go where?”
Bill shook his head. “We can make a dash for the car, and then we drive.”
They stared at each other a moment, then out the door they went, running.
Nails. Spikes. Blood. Tears. Abandoned. Forsaken. Alone.
They drove as fast as they could, slowing down every so often to dodge cars, debris, wreckage…bodies.
A cry. A statement. “It is finished.”
“Over there!” Bill yelled at the top of his lungs.
Sarah looked with squinted eyes in the direction Bill was pointing. “I don’t see anything…” yet even as she spoke it became clear. There was a break in the dark, black sky. She could see blue ahead. And…sunshine. Yes! She could see the sun. “Drive Billy, drive!” Her excitement quickly disappeared as she began to make out a great black space of nothingness between the hell they found themselves in now and the beautiful world beyond…just out of reach. “What is it, Bill?”
Bill stared at the blackness that separated the two worlds. “I don’t know, but I’m going to keep going.” He pounded the steering wheel. “We’ll make it, I know we will. I believe. Do you, Sarah, do you believe?”
Death swallowed.
She looked at her two children in the back seat, both of which were fast asleep. “I believe, honey. I believe.”
Three days.
They drove towards the blackness, towards the great hole…towards the great divide.
Empty tomb.
In a flash it happened. “What is it, Billy?”
Resurrection.
Bill stared as he watched what seemed to be a sort of passageway, made of what looked like solid rock, fall from the sky. This humongous bridge flew past their car and headed straight for the blackness ahead. Bill and Sarah watched silently as the large mass set itself down where the black hole of nothingness once was.
Safety.
Bill and Sarah began to cry as the car moved smoothly over the great rock that connected the old world to the new. They held hands in wonder as they crossed over to the new world, amazed at its beauty, amazed at it wonders.
Freedom. Home.
Sarah looked in the backseat at her children, who were still fast asleep, oblivious to the situation. The car drove on…and a feeling of love beyond description filled both Bill and Sarah. Long, deep, un-compromised, satisfying love…
May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God. – Ephesians 3:19 (NLT)
