Seeking to enhance the experience for her, I asked “Do you like what you see out of the window, darling? Tell me what you see Cindy?”
“I see brown and white cows, flocks of sheep, and lots of green grass!” she exclaimed. In the passenger seat, my beloved overworked Tommy snored his heart out.
Minutes later he woke with a start saying “Why are we going so slowly?”
We were in Devon at last. It was mine and Tommy’s beautiful home county. Ten years ago we had left for the big city to find success and had found it, but there was a cost.
Working for a church in a busy city suburb replete with people of many nations where Tom was the assistant pastor was demanding and noisy. He and I knew that he was reaching the lost as Jesus commanded us to. He loved his work especially the Street Preaching Ministry.
Street preaching occurred on busy street corners and together with other believers we handed out salvation leaflets, offered prayer and gave out food to the homeless. The result was church growth but at a personal cost.
Exhaustion was frequent and it was rarely quiet. City sounds such as incessant car horns, buses, trains on tracks invaded our apartment night and day. Visually the horizon was pierced by spires and high rises. It was ‘unquiet’ and we so longed for trees, birds and ‘quiet’.
We often spoke longingly of the peace of ‘home’. However, the city church was fertile ground for evangelism and it was our calling.
We continued our car journey home. Our plan was to spend time with family and Cindy would meet with her grandparents and cousins. We would go for long quiet country walks along well-worn tracks near the river’s edge, across green fields and see cows and sheep grazing.
All the sounds here would be natural and not man made like in the city.
