The plain faced lady with the shrill voice jerked my arm as she herded me into an office. A tall man with bushy eyebrows spoke in a hollow base voice. “We ain’t got no spare bed, lady. Told ya that when ya called. Spoke it as plain as I can say it—no spare bed.”
“Mr. Harwell, I heard what you said, but I have no place for this girl. You must take her!” Plain Face shrieked.
“State says I have to have a spare bed. They can’t sleep together no more. Lady, I ain’t got no spare bed—don’t plan on having one no time soon.”
“Well what does the state expect me to do with her?” questioned Plain Face who still had a death grip on my skinny arm. Her head nodded sideways at me as she said her, as if it was a dirty word.
I took in a deep breathe which I immediately regretted. The place smelled of unclean bodies and urine. “Can you please take me with you?” I asked the woman. She looked at me as if I were speaking a foreign tongue.
“Me! Have you lost your mind? I don’t keep, I just pick up whomever I’m ordered to. That’s all!”
So, I was a whomever; I had no real value, just a whomever.
At that instant, something inside me stood to attention and shouted . . . You are a Child of God! You are somebody!” I turned to see if anyone else heard. No one did. It was the Lord. He had always been with me, and He wanted me to know He was still there.
Plain Face and the man continued to argue. Finally, the bushy eye-browed man said, “Why don’t ya take her to the mission house in the country. They’ll take her.”
Plain Face lit up as if a light bulb had come on in her head. Without further argument she turned with me in tow and rushed out the door. “Oh Lord, thank you for being with me. I know this mission house has to be better than that place. Please take care of the children in that dreadful house.” I prayed as I was dragged down the driveway.
The lady drove out of the city away from the hustle. Before long we were on a tree lined road. Cows and horses stood by fences replacing the tall buildings and noisy street corners. It felt like a place I could enjoy living—a peaceful place.
My imagination kicked in . . . there would be a stately Victorian house with wide porches on three sides. A large red barn with stalls filled with fragrant hay, neat rows of nests for the chickens, roosters ruling the barnyard; there would be cows lowing while their calves kicked up their heels and horses ran gracefully to the barn.
The lady of the house would be welcoming. She would be smiling. White lace curtains would be billowing out of open windows. And of course, there would be doilies on long-legged tables, soft settees and braided rugs on the wood floors . . .
“Hey, girl, get out. We’re here.” Plain Face’s enthusiasm for relieving herself of me was apparent in her voice.
I looked out the window—my heart raced as my eyes focused on a white Victorian house atop a hill flanked by a large red barn. “Oh Lord how great and mighty you are!”
Standing on the porch was a kind looking woman smiling from ear to ear as if she knew I was arriving today. Plain Face sarcastically regurgitated, “You must have a guardian angel kid. This place beats the other one hands down.”
Yes, I have someone looking out for me and He’s never without a spare bed. I may not be special to Plain Face or bushy brows, but I’m the apple of my Lord’s eye. Psalms 17:8 NKJV and Deuteronomy 33: 10 NKJV
