What was it like….so long ago? It is impossible for us to imagine the total void that filled the space where now our universe exists in all its glory. There were no chirping birds at sunrise, there was no sunrise. No spotted fawns leaping about, trying out their new-found legs. No glistening lakes reflecting millions of watery diamonds. No bear emerging from his long winter’s nap. No majestic trees dancing to the ballet of the wind. No children giggling, romping mid the burst of beautiful wild blooms. No man, no woman. It was black. Scary, silent, sightless black.
Enter God, the one and only living God. He spoke and the universe as we know it came into existence, piece by piece, day by day. No doubt He never broke a sweat as He called the light into existence. Then, in His miraculous way, He separated the brilliant, new light from the age-old darkness and proclaimed the very first DAY.
God looked at His work and WOW, He declared it was good. Let’s see….what might God do for an encore? “And God said, ‘Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water‘….God called the expanse SKY.” Now there was morning and evening, sky and water, light and dark. It was the second day and God said it was all good.
On the third day God separated the waters into seas and brought forth dry ground that He called “land.” The seven continents took their place in the geography of the earth while the oceans and seas, lakes and rivers formed to God’s command. He must have been enjoying His handiwork because He wasn’t finished yet. He put majestic trees and verdant shrubs in place with seed-bearing vegetation before declaring the day complete. Now there were giant oaks and fragrant cedars, apple, peach, pear, and orange trees showing off their colorful fruit while potatoes and onions and cauliflower burst forth. God must have taken a long look at His day’s work for he declared it very good.
Now WHAT would God think up for His fourth day? Ahhhhh! Something to shed light on all His creation. A large light for daytime, a smaller one for night….and stars by the zillions to twinkle in the bright night sky. He declared these would set the seasons and days and years in order.
Fifth day coming up. What surprises does God have for this day? How about some fish and other creatures in the water and birds to decorate the skies. The waters teemed with fish, large and small, brilliantly colored like the rainbow or dull as dirt, darting here and there, rippling the surface as they swam and leaped midst the lobster and snails, octopi and whales. But, look up. Floating softly on the breezes are ruby red cardinals, royal eagles, fluttering hummingbirds, jet black crows, hefty geese and thousands more in large and small sizes and various shapes. God liked His work that day. He said it was “good,” and He blessed all those creatures and told them to be fruitful and multiply. The fifth day was at an end.
There must have been a beautiful sunrise on the sixth day. Something very special would come from God. First He made the animals for roaming the land, livestock and creatures that slithered across the earth. He liked what He saw. Only one thing remained. God made man and woman, living beings made in His own image, people to rule over the earth. From dust he made the earthly body, but the eternal spirit living within that body came directly from God. He gave man and woman the ability to think, to reason, to choose. God checked on the sixth day’s work and declared it “very good.”
On the seventh day, God rested.

The days and years and seasons have rolled by for centuries, just like God said they would. His predictions, promises and prophecies have stood the test of time. In this crazy, mixed-up, tumultuous time of which we are a part, God is the one constant we can always count on. What a mighty God we serve!
