“I know. It’s been so long, but only a few more days. I can’t wait to hold you in my arms. This year has flown by here in the mission fields, but it seems like a lifetime since I have held you.” Ronald smiled as best he could, but he was missing his bride.
“I understand that you are meant to be there helping lead those people to Christ, but is it selfish that I want time with you, too? I feel kind of guilty.” Sara hung her head in shame.
“I don’t think you are guilty. God made us to be together as a husband and wife. We are supposed to be one, helping each other out. It’s true I am here for a reason, but my time is just about up.” Ronald smiled encouragingly into his tablet.
“I can’t believe that it’s going to be our two year anniversary next week. I am so glad you will be here for that.” Sara hoped nothing would deter the surprise plans she had for Ronald. She had made reservations at a nice restaurant and then planned an evening alone. It was going to be wonderful.
“About that,” Ronald said sheepishly. “I have to tell you that our flights have been changed. We are still planning on the timeline of leaving in three days, but the war has taken a turn for the worse, and we are having a hard time getting a plane to take us from here in the village to the airport we can fly out of. I’m so sorry. I hate to tell you this.”
“What?” Sara said in surprise. She was scared hearing that he not only might not make it home on time, but that he was in danger, too.
“We are okay. We’re far enough away from the fighting right now, but we need to find someone who can fly us out of here pretty soon. I’m sorry, but I have to get going. I love you and will be home soon.” Ronald pursed his lips and gave her a kiss.
“Okay, I love you. Be safe please. Good-bye.” Sara sent a kiss back. At that her screen went black.
Sara was more nervous now than she had been at the beginning of the year. She remembered the day he came home with the news. Ronald had come home so happy springing the news that he was able to go on a yearlong mission’s trip to the Middle East and parts of Africa. She was surprised because they were about to celebrate their one year anniversary. He had to leave the next day, and after praying about it, they had both decided that he was supposed to go. It was hard on both of them, but they knew it was the right answer.
After talking to Roger on the computer, Sara did not hear from him for the next couple of days. She was worried and a little upset. She wondered what was happening. Did they get out on time? Were they still in harm’s way? She could take it no longer. The suspense was driving her crazy.
Two days before their second anniversary, she heard the front door open. She was in the kitchen and could not see who was opening the door. She turned the corner to see who was coming into the house. She was very surprised at what she saw.
“I’m home darling,” Ronald said, smiling the biggest smile she had ever seen.
Sara ran into his open arms and collapsed against him. “It’s really you?” she asked, making sure her mind wasn’t playing tricks on her.
“It’s really me,” Ronald said smiling. “I’m sorry I couldn’t get word to you. It was a crazy time, and the battery on my tablet and phone both died.”
“All that matters is that you are here now,” Sara said smiling. “I love you so much,” she said looking up to kiss him.
“I love you, too,” Ronald replied. Their lips met. “Even though my time there was important, my time with you is equally so.”
“I think I love you more today than the day you left,” Sara said.
“Well, they do say that absence makes the heart grow fonder,” Roger said moving in for another kiss.
