Sadly, many Christians hide the depression they sometimes must go through in the same way, often because of the judgmental comments of other Christians.
“You must pray for more faith.”
“It’s a sin to be depressed.”
“You need to seek forgiveness.”
Instead of finding comfort and help, a depressed person sinks deeper into a black hole.
Reading through the Bible, we see many expressions of depression. Even Jesus went through the darkness of deep emotional pain in the garden of Gethsemane and on the cross.
Psalm 69:20 Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair.
I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.
Various factors can lead to depression even when a person is serving God. An overload of work is just one circumstance.
Sometimes God teaches us the most profound lessons through trials. When we have passed through the darkest valley of torment and despair, we realize that Jesus was there all the time, sharing and bearing the pain with us.
Isaiah 30:20-21 And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction ... your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.
Maybe that is why Jesus said, “enter your closet, and when you have shut the door, pray to your Father who is in secret…” Matthew 6:5-6
God knows the pain and feeling of futility of a person going through depression. He gives new hope and a vision for a brighter future. There are no skeletons left in the closet of despair after an encounter with the God who sees us wherever we are, physically, mentally or spiritually.
