But there was no doubt
The students were waiting
For school to be out.
Their eyes glazing over,
Like so many donuts,
They sighed and waited
To be out of their ruts.
The clock was being watched
By many pairs of eyes,
Trying to focus, but not
Losing sight of the prize.
Recess was a mem’ry.
The students were wiggling,
Johnnie made a face,
And the kids started giggling.
The blackboard had notes
About a time long ago,
A time of thanksgiving
And friendship, you know.
It was about more than
Turkey, funny hats and stuff.
It was a time to be thankful
When things were tough.
The teacher was frustrated
That she couldn’t share more.
But the board had spoken,
If she did, out the door.
God placed her here,
The young lives to touch.
She could only pray
That it would be enough.
With each passing year,
God was left out more.
But, she prayed for each
As they walked out the door.
For each child she prayed,
That she’d planted some seeds.
That the gospel would shine
Through her love and her deeds.
Each day she was thankful,
For a path being paved
By her work in the school
For young souls to be saved.
