Who is that? Must be one of the army boys. It’s the same crowd here today--Vince, Luke, Dennis, Terry, and Randy—except for him. What in the world could have made him so skinny! He looks like a string bean! Must be all the C-Rats and marching. But, my goodness! He can really skate. That is the fastest I have ever seen anyone skate in my life! I’d like to meet him.

Well, here I am. They say this is the place to meet girls. I don’t know why I ever let Vince drag me out here, I don’t want to meet a girl right now. I’ve got too much on my plate already—4 classes and 40 hour work weeks, I don’t have time! Same ones are here every week. They’re pretty and nice enough—I wish Tracey hadn’t called me though, she’s never ready on time. Well, time for another spin round on the rink. If Luke doesn’t stop ice dancing with that floozie, he’ll never be a speed skater. Wait! Who is that girl? Wow—I’ve never seen anyone quite so pretty.

What did he just put on? Is that a sweater or a cloth bag? That sweater is at least 3 sizes too big for him. Hmm. Tracey did say he was one of the younger brothers—must be a hand-me-down. Wow, can he ever skate. Vince says he’s the best speed skater in his age class. Poor guy, his friends are all paired up and he’s skating in a circle, looking so serious. Maybe I’ll ask him to skate with me.

Whew, I know I’m a little slow on time. Gotta keep practicing for the competition. Why does that girl keep staring at skinny old me? She’s way outta my league. She’d never go for someone like me. Does seem awfully shy though, maybe she’d like a friend. All her other friends are paired off with my buddies. Is that a sign? Should I make the move?

Maybe if I drop my handkerchief….

If I stop and say something, she’ll probably ignore me.

I wish he’d walk over.

I wish she’d just say something.

Oh, he’s coming over!

Well, here goes…

I’m going to ask him...

Going go ask her...

“Hi there. Would you like to skate with me?”
