I sense a change is just a heartbeat away.
I am tight and constricted
But with each urge, space looms large.
Voices echo and bounce, growing louder.
Words surround me and envelope me
And encourage me forth.
My eyes try to focus as the light intensifies,
But nothing is making sense.
I am pulled, gagged, prodded, and rubbed.
Cold hands won’t let me go!
“Put me back! I want back!”
I am screaming at the top of my lungs,
But no one understands me!
Chaos surrounds me as this new life begins,
And I cry out to my Maker,
“Please, help me!”
Then, I hear it, soft but gentle-
The voice that named me now calls my name.
My wails become a whimper
As my eyes seek the face I’ve longed to see.
Warm hands reach out to me,
And the touch pulls me close.
"She’s beautiful."
Words filled with love and carried in the voice of an angel.
She holds me closer and smiles.
Arms that won’t let me go,
Release a hand to caress my face,
And all of time stands still.
Every voice becomes a distant murmur
As I focus on this, my mother.
My hand reaches out to touch her face;
She is beautiful.
Exhausted, she provides nourishment,
And I hang on her every word,
Taking in every smell of her,
On a day I will never remember –
My birthday.
