When babies are born, we want a response. So what do we do? We play “peek-a-boo”. To baby’s surprise, we disappear. We call out their name. They look around in fear.
For a moment they are bewilderingly alone, and then we suddenly move and return. Back we pop into their lives. “Peek-a-Boo!” Surprise!
We make eye-contact, giggle. We share individual attention. What rapture! What joy! We’ve achieved a connection!
Then the baby becomes a child, and the game becomes “hide and seek”. But, longing to be found, they give away clues to help us meet. Like peeping, tapping, humming or making a fuss. And if we cry out “Where are you?!” – they often answer us.
Because in the moments they are hiding, they are alone. And they are overtly longing, hoping, impatient to be found.
They are found and we laugh. We share individual attention. What rapture! What joy! We’ve achieved a connection!
Then the child becomes a teen, and the game becomes intense. They hide fears, anxieties and claim independence. Though longing to be found, they give away no clues. And if we ask “Where are you?!” – they rarely make a move.
Because in the moments they are hiding, they are struggling alone. Yet in this journey they’re longing, hoping, impatient to be found.
We find them and talk. We share individual attention. What rapture! What joy! We’ve achieved a connection!
Then the teen becomes adult, and the players change. A new person is sought and it is no longer a game. Longing to be found, they have things they will try – like smiling, laughing, clowning around or catching an eye.
Because in the moments they are hiding, they are alone. And they are deeply longing, hoping, impatient to be found.
The adults find each other and beam. They share individual attention. What rapture! What joy! They’ve achieved a connection!
Then the adults become parents, and the games start anew. When they had a baby, they knew just what to do.
“Peek-a-boo!”

John 15:9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.
"What rapture! What joy! We’ve achieved a connection!"
Again - I reiterate: LOVED IT!!
