And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross!
There was a Counsel in Heaven.
“Mankind has sold the Kingdom I gave him. He was My Son and I was his Companion and Father. Yet he sold it all to the Serpent, our enemy, whose goal is Mankind’s destruction.
All of Heaven could feel the Father’s grief at this terrible betrayal. The under-angels hardly dared move at the devastating news. How could such a thing happen?
A warring angel stepped forward. “Do you want us to destroy the ingrates, My Lord?”
“No, Victor, thank you. My heart is broken, but I love Mankind. It is still My desire to give him the Kingdom I promised. There must be another way.”
Michael stepped forward, “My Lord, I will go with my legions and fight the Serpent. We will win the Kingdom back for Mankind and lock the Serpent away. If You will allow me, my Lord.” And he bowed low.
“Thank You, Michael. But I gave Mankind the Kingdom to do with as he chose. So a man must win the Kingdom back. What’s more, it must be a man without sin, for only then will he be able to stand against the Serpent and pay the price.”
There was a buzz of celestial voices. Who then could win the Kingdom back? How could a man with no sin be found?
Suddenly a clear Voice rang out above the others, “I’ll go, Father. I’ll become a man and win the Kingdom back.” There was a shocked silence in Heaven. No one would expect such a thing. For the Son of God to become a man? It was unthinkable.
Finally, the Father said softly, almost as one would explain to a child, “Even though it seems only a moment from here, it would seem from there to go on almost forever. And the temptation to sin would be very real.”
“I know. But if You will send Your Spirit with me, I can do it. You know it’s the only way.”
“They will not recognize You or receive You. Many will scoff and persecute You.” The patient Voice of the Father sounded sad already at the thought.
“Yes. But You love them anyway. And Your love is their only hope. I will do it for THEM.”
The sadness in the Father’s Voice deepened. Tears sprang to the eyes of the angels who were listening. “They will torture You and kill You. The pain will be very real, overwhelming to the body and soul of a man.”
The Son bowed his head as though he felt the grief already. Finally He raised His head, and with clear eyes looked into the heart of His Father. He almost whispered, “You and I are one, My Father. I feel Your pain.” Then He squared His shoulders and His Voice rang out once again with clarity and purpose, “Send Me, Father. I’ll do it for YOU.”
And His Voice echoed down through eternity…
