As we begin to accept ourselves as getting older, we must also accept the promise of God that when the days of our life here on earth have ended, our new life with Christ begins. The Word of God tells us that when this life has ended, we become absent from these bodies and present with the Lord (II Corinthians 5:6). The ultimate fulfillment of life is to have lived life for Christ, with anticipation and joy of knowing that there is life beyond the one we have been familiar with here on earth.
Growing older brings the end of life’s journey closer and more and more clear. Every circumstance, every incident, every event is viewed heavily and not taken so lightly. We must accept the fact that the flight of life has slowed down and the things we have known will soon be gone and the things we may still want to know take on a brand new meaning. The roads that we once traveled will now be traveled by others. The roads we may still want to travel may be anticipated with more urgency, yet seeming further away. The once forgotten dreams and visions are revisited and new desires may be kindled. We may wonder did fulfillment take root or has it withered and dried.
In getting older, we may sometimes look back with regret on what was not accomplished or what should have been done. Too often, we take the flight of life revisiting the past, flying past the present, and soaring ahead to the future; a future filled with sadness and regrets that if I could of, should of, if only and maybe did this or that, then there would have been fulfillment.
As we take the flight on life, we must grab hold of God’s truth. Because fulfillment is only in Him. Fulfillment is not in our accomplishments. Fulfillment does not pass us by because of what we did or did not say or do. Fulfillment is knowing that God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have ever lasting life (John 3:16). Fulfillment is believing that Jesus died, rose again and went back to heaven to prepare a place for us to spend eternity (John 14:3). Fulfillment is accepting that in Christ there is peace, love and joy. Fulfillment is believing Psalm 23’s beginning that "the Lord is my Shepherd"; it’s ending "I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever", and all the truths in between.
So as we continue on this flight of life, let’s remember that as long as God is our pilot, fulfillment travels right along with us, around, below, above and beyond this life.
