“What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?”
They counted out and handed over to me 30 pieces of silver. I then watched for my opportunity to hand him over.
I have made a horrible mistake. The voices in my head told me to make this foolish decision. I feel like Satan is inside of me. And instead of asking Jesus to heal me, I sold him. I’m shaking and yet calm. Even though I have some silver in my pocket, I feel cheap.
I went with the other disciples to the city to prepare the Passover. All afternoon the noises in my head was deafening. I couldn’t stay focused and I was looking over my shoulder all day. I felt like someone was following me.
When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with us. And while we were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”
Looking around the room I could see the sad, but curious looks on the brother’s faces. One by one asking, “Surly you don’t mean me Lord?”
Jesus keeps glancing my way. He knows, and he knows that I know that he knows. It’s difficult to breath. I’m soaking wet, I can’t stop sweating.
Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand in the bowl with me will betray me. The Son of Man will go as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be been better for him if he had not been born.”
Then I, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”
Jesus answered, “You have said so.”
While we were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to us, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, again he gave it to us, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
We then shared a hymn together. It’s hard to sing when you’re distracted. It’s hard to sing when you can’t breathe, and feel like you’re being squeezed.
It’s also hard to sing when Jesus is staring at you and you can hear the drip of his broken heart.
Later that night Jesus was speaking with the other disciples, and I walked up to him. With me was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now I had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.”
There is no turning back now and with my heart pounding in my chest I said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.
Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”
Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
Grabbing his arm I took his sword and begin threatening the mob shouting, “I lied, this is not the man. You’ve arrested the wrong man.”
Swinging the sword at one of the soldiers, he blocked it with his shield and drew his dagger and stuck it into my stomach.
“Put your swords back in their places,” Jesus said to them, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? Judas what are you doing?
“I’m sorry Lord for betraying you. I was trying to right the wrong. I wanted to show you that I do stand by you. That I am sorry and that I will die for you.”
“You know that this changes nothing. The Scriptures must be fulfilled and must happen in this way?”
“I’m sorry Master; could you find it in your broken heart to forgive me?”
“I will tell you the same as I will tell the thief tomorrow. You will be with me in paradise.”
