“No, sweetheart. An eye exam just tests your eyes, not what you know.”
Mom was called through for her eye exam first. Charlie watched as she read letters from a poster. It was only when she had finished that Charlie realised they were capital letters, not the small letters he was learning at school.
Now it was his turn.
“Ummm…A.” A is for Adam, his old friend from kindergarten.
“Not sure of that next one. C, for Charlie, not sure…Err…I can’t see the rest.” Charlie was trying to think so hard his face was burning up.
“OK, don’t worry little man. Poor eyesight is nothing to be embarrassed about. Try these on.” The optician handed him a pair of glasses. They had really bright blue frames, like the ones Jeremy wore. Jeremy was the smartest kid in class.
“Cool!” Charlie put them on, and the world went all watery.
“Ok? Great. Any problems just come back and see me.” The optician shook hands with mum, and disappeared down the corridor.
“Well, he was in a rush! Come on, time for school.” On the way out, Charlie bumped into a glasses stand.
“Owww!” The stand wobbled. All the glasses wobbled. Sunlight shone from the wobbling lenses, and flashed in Charlie’s eyes. “Aargh!”
At school, everybody loved his glasses. But Charlie was feeling dizzy and his head was sore, so at lunchtime he swapped them with Kyle for a packet of crisps.
“Why is Kyle wearing your glasses, Charlie?” asked the teacher.
Kyle handed them back, whispering “I want my crisps back!”
When the class changed for games, Charlie made sure he put his glasses in a safe place – on top of the lockers.
At home time, Charlie’s mom met him in the playground. “Where’s your new glasses, Charlie?”
Charlie thought hard. He sort of remembered where they were, but didn’t want them back.
“We’ll have to look then!” They looked in the classroom, in the dining room and finally in the changing room.
“Why did you leave them up there?” Mum stretched up to get them, brushing the dust from the case.
After supper, Charlie round to Ned’s.
“Nice glasses!”
“Great. Just keep them then!” Charlie ran back home.
Mom opened the front door. “Charlie, where are your…
“Mom, listen, the glasses hurt my head and I can’t see properly with them. The eye exam was in capital letters and I haven’t learned them yet!”
“Oh! That’s why you keep losing them, right?”
Charlie nodded.
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier sweetheart? We’ll take them back tomorrow. So…where are they?”
Now Charlie really couldn’t remember.
There was a bang on the door. Ned stood outside wearing Charlie’s glasses. He walked in like a zombie.
“There they are!” Charlie put them back in the case and gave them to mom. He rubbed his eyes and blinked several times. “I can finally see clearly now. “
