Adam read the note again:
Adam,
I cannot go through with this marriage, I thought I could but we want
different things in our lives. You want prestige and lots of money is important
to you. You are always working and striving to get ahead to the point that I do
not know you anymore. You say it’s for us, but I am not a real part of the equation.
The wedding has not been a big factor for you; you are not interested in that or
the house we sought to buy. You have even quit coming to church. You say
you need that time for relaxation, God would understand. I don’t understand
your driven desires, and I don’t think God would either. Your priorities are
messed up. When I have attempted to talk to you, you’d just smile and say you’ll see.
It’s plain that you have made your decisions, and you are perfectly satisfied
to carry them out. That’s fine, but I have other decisions for my life.
Adam, have a good life here, I can’t stay and watch you destroy yourself
for material things. I am leaving and I will not be back. You will find your ring in the envelope.
I will always care about you,
Diane.
“Danny, did you know about this? Any of this?” Adam looked for answers from his friend.
“No Adam, this is the first I knew about it also. I’m sorry, but maybe it’s a sign for the best, and maybe you shouldn’t get married.”
“What a thing to say Danny.” Adam turned abruptly and walked out of the apartment.
Adam remembered the note a couple of times over the next five years. He did climb the ladder to the top, bought the house that he and Diane were to purchase and even married a good friend of hers. He pretended to be happy but something was missing for him.
His circle of friends loved to go out on the week-ends, but soon that grew old too.
Stuck in the bottom drawer laid the ‘note’. His eyes scanned over the words. ‘God would understand’ it hit him like a ton of bricks. It was true he had not been as happy as he was when he went to church, that was what was missing in his life. What a fool he had been. He was blaming Madeline for all of it. He hoped it was not too late to make this up to Madeline, he sure loved her. She tried to get him to go to church, but he flatly turned her down. “Go if you want, but don’t bother me with it.” So after months of trying, Madiline just let him have his way over almost everything.
Madiline met with Danny the next day for lunch, Adam couldn’t make if of course.
“Danny, what is wrong with Adam? He seems so distant anymore, I love him so much but nothing I do seems to faze him.”
“I don’t think it’s you. What he wants is the most important thing to him. You know, I can see why Dianne just let him go; she would not or did not want to put up with this.”
“I don’t think I can much longer, Danny. I can’t bring a child into this, right now. Adam would hate the news that we were expecting. I can’t bear to tell him.”
“Madiline, this is good news. He will have to get his priorities straight. You should tell him.”
Over dinner that night both Adam and Madiline had news to tell. Adam asked if he could go first.
“Madeline, please forgive me, I have been a complete idiot, I want us to start going to church and living out lives for God, I want you to forgive me for my selfishness in our marriage, Honey, I love you so much!”
Madeline reached over and kissed Adam, “I love you deeply too. This is what I always wanted, Adam.” She gave him a misty-eyed look.
“What was is you wanted to tell me, Hon?”
“Just that the timing was great on our talk, I think I can rejoice in telling you, we’re having a baby!”
“Wow!” Adam grinned. “Let our new life begin.”
