It was the beating in her chest that reminded her that she was alive. The last three months were devastating. Her once happy home filled laughter, love and family was invaded by selfishness and rejection. Coarse words with no remorse echoed through the walls of her marriage. He looked at her with fierce eyes and shallow judgment. ‘I don’t want you! It is over between us! Who would ever want you! ‘These sentences replaced till death do us part and for better or worse.
A gentle tap on her shoulder motioned her that their lunch hour was almost over and they needed to get back to work. Sarah had found a refuge in Anna’s home. Anna was her best friend, prayer partner and own personal shrink. Anna looked to Sarah and said, ‘I know my words may sound empty right now but rest assured that Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you. You have to keep going for the sake of your children and God will turn to good whatever the devil intends for evil.’ Rest! That seemed so far away recently. She would fall asleep but never slept.
How many times Sarah had echoed the very same sentiment of Gods promise to those in distress? She knew what needed to be done. Ignorance is not bliss. She had to know what was going on. Even as the motion of the car eased her tension , Sarah remembered her Sunday school lesson on Matt 11:28 (NIV) Then Jesus said, ‘Come unto me all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens and I will give you rest.’ Twenty fours years ago and the word came back like a flood.
He came home way past midnight. She stood in the bleakness of the dark and watched him sleep knowing that the truth she seeks overpowers the love she has for him. Sarah took the anointing oil, anointed his clothes with oil and prayed the deepest prayer she ever cried out and asked that before this present day ends, and before she puts her head on the pillow she must know the truth.
Her spirit knew a boulder would be crashing over her life but she would be rest assured that Jesus was her shield. All her life she heard about the covenant of marriage. Little did she realize one day she would learn that not all covenant makers understand covenant.
He was earlier than normal. The car parked outside the house and not in the garage which was a clear indication that this was no ordinary night. In the stillness of the darkest night in her life, his confession shattered her heart. ‘I am leaving you, I have found someone else and she is pregnant.’ Even as these words left his mouth, his eyes peered into the ground without remorse. God answered her prayer.
Sarah looked at him with a fierce glare. The truth set her free. Three months of misery, words of rejection and pain caused by the actions of a devious man was over. The chapter closed. He left her and her children.
The next day she set her hair and put on her makeup. She looked into the mirror and knew she is kept not in turmoil or in distress but in perfect rest by the one who heals her brokenness, never rejects her and never breaks her heart. Sarah found rest in Christ alone.
