But too soon the gathering ended. Into the trashcan went the bones, the rinds, the plates with half-eaten salads and Coke cans. There they would pass the time until Thursday’s trash pick-up. A lot can happen in a few days. What was a sweet fragrance to our nostrils has now became a putrid stench. Who would even think of eating that half-eaten watermelon slice with the maggots parading through it? And could anyone stomach the moldy potato salad?
In the Old Testament, when they wanted to say that someone was extremely displeasing to another, they used the term “stench in the nostrils“. Unfortunately, when we come to God with our own righteousness, it is stench in His nostrils like the Thursday trashcan. But there is good news! When Father sees our righteousness through the work Jesus did on the cross, it becomes new again, like the Sunday fragrance, only wafting up to heaven. Not only do we get a feast fit for royalty, through adoption we become royalty. And, just as Aunt Hazel took ordinary ingredients and created culinary delights, so also God takes our meager beginnings and creates a fragrant masterpiece.
