TITLE: One Fall Day | Previous Challenge Entry

Yesterday I took the day off from work; after getting my children off to school I decided to take advantage of a somewhat empty house; not completely empty because my husband had taken the day off too. I ate breakfast and decided that since I still had on my pajamas I would return to bed to watch the morning news (a luxury I never have, with four children). I must have fallen asleep at some point during the news because I woke up about one hour later. I looked outside to see the beautiful sunshine and noticed that my husband was also napping. I quietly went outside to enjoy the fall air, and to tidy the yard.
I began by putting away bikes, wagons, and other forgotten items of interest from my children’s last day of playing in the yard. I then started clipping back my hostas and cleaning the yard debris.
I was a bit winded but was still enjoying the time in the yard. I decided to start a fire in the fire pit to burn the leaves I was about to rake. I began raking the leaves and decided that this was an activity that required something to break the monotony of it. I determined that my husband had had enough sleep and I rang the doorbell non-stop; so as to make sure that he would hear it, then run around the house so he couldn’t see me if he came to door. After a few tries of this childish prank, and not being sure if he were even responding I decided to stick my head in the front door and call him by his sir name in a very childish voice asking if he could come out and play using the name that only his mother calls him.
He responded “He’s sleep! Come back later, I don’t want to wake him” these little pranks brought me so much pleasure that I almost burst my side with laughter; if I didn’t live in a working class neighborhood where all of my three neighbors were gone to work someone surely would have had me committed. I couldn’t stop ringing the bell, hiding and calling into the house for him; after about two hours of the childish pranks, and being thoroughly sure that my husband had had enough of my foolishness. I decided to go in and have lunch, he was by then unaffected by what had brought me so much pleasure, he had returned to sleep.
My children arrived home from school a few hours later and noticed that I had been burning leaves in the yard.
My eight year old asked, “Can I burn some leaves too?”
“Sure”, I responded, thinking to myself she’s not going to want to do this long after she realizes how much work is involved with raking. Erin and I went outside to start off where I had left off earlier that day. We both raked and threw leaves into the fire pit, it wasn’t long before my entire family had been drawn out into the yard raking leaves and cleaning the yard together. We all stayed outside until the rain and darkness sent us indoors. I can still smell the smoke in my hair this morning. Every time the fragrance goes past my nostrils I am filled with a pleasant memory and laughter.
Isn’t it wonderful how fragrance can conjure memories? Let’s learn to relish in them.
