We are in and out of our cars. We are in and out of the stores. We are in and out of our homes, in what are all but fractions of seconds in the grand scheme of life.
We are so un-wired to each other with a cell phone in this hand or that purse we don’t even notice it. The landline phone businesses are all but gone if they haven’t changed their business model to wireless or VIOP.
So the next new business venture I see as we dash in and out of our daily activities is a new way of shopping. The In and Out Convenience Mart. It will be a medium size building that allows us to drive in one end and we exit thru the other with our order and never get out of the car. Now don’t get me wrong, this is not a new idea. They have had similar stores out in the Midwest for years. Now they will be everywhere.
What will be new is the ordering will be done thru our iphone or blackberry. As we drive
into the store, the Bluetooth feature of the phone will register with the location and locate the order that was pulled and packed for the mobile device calling in.
There will be of course, not be a single human being that you can interact with, because interaction takes time and no one has any spare time available to do such. Halfway down the building will be an order summary screen and a speaker. You will talk at the speaker just like you do at one of the fast food places. A voice will ask is there anything you would like to change on the order, but because you are in a hurry and there are several cars behind you, also in a hurry, you will say “no thank you”, just as if you were talking to a real human being.
At the end of the building, a dumbwaiter style door will open and allow you to grab your order and put it in the seat next to you. The order will be small, as there is a limit to 6 or 7 items per drive through. This is because we are at a convenience store after all. No money will actually exchange hands because your charges will be with drawn from the account tied to your marvelous wireless hand held device that you placed the order with.
Imagine the time saved with this new In & Out Convenience Mart. No more looking for a parking space, no more walking, no searching for what is needed or even not needed. We will save time and not have to interact with anyone but ourselves. Ah, the future.
And the memories of my walking down to the Endicott Pharmacy with a dime for the latest comic book will be just that, a memory. The smile of the white haired lady taking the dime is fading though. The comic book came in, and so did I. We both went out together and I was satisfied.
