God has the ability to satisfy the needs of every living thing. Psalms, 146:16 says, “You open your hand and satisfy every living thing.” However, we seek satisfaction from every area of our lives except through God. Man’s advertisements appeal to our earthly senses of sight, taste, touch, sound, and smell. We try to fill our needs and desires through earthly goods. The benefit we get through man made products does not give us lasting satisfaction, they are only temporal. God’s word appeals to us through our hungering from within our soul. The satisfaction we get from God’s word is eternal.
Jesus knows he is the Son Of God. He knows he holds the keys to the scripture. He knows he freely gives us eternal life. John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Are we ready to accept his free gift? All we have to do is believe in Jesus Christ and we will have eternal life. Is it possible that we balk at a free gift that will give us peace, happiness, and joy? Maybe, some of us feel the gift isn’t quite so free?
No, the gift of eternal life is not free. To receive the gift requires a decision. The decision to believe in Christ is a decision we can make, but the decision to live without sin is impossible. Only one man has ever done this and that man is Jesus Christ. However, Jesus Christ implores us to follow him and become his disciples so we can bring God’s word to the ends of the earth.
The word of God is the foundation of the universe. Isaiah 26:3 “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord is the Rock Eternal. “God’s word is eternal, never wavering, never false, and always true. Man’s interpretation of the Bible can be false, but the word of God is always constant. Nothing in the Bible has ever been proven false, ever.
However, giving up the satisfaction we derive from the world is difficult. Sometimes, we don’t trust in what we can’t immediately discern from our five temporal senses. We are reminded when Peter saw Jesus walking on the water, he also stepped out in faith and tried to walk on the water. He took a few steps, then immediately began to sink. Only when Jesus held him up with his hand was Peter able to walk back to the boat safely.
God’s word is rock solid. Jesus healed the sick, raised the dead, and walked on water. However, for common man, full of fear and doubt, following Jesus causes us to walk on unsteady ground. You might say, we are still in the bush, not ready to give up our perch in the briar patch. Jesus said, “If you have the faith of a mustard seed you can move mountains.” Yet, how many of our prayers go unanswered? Jesus asks us to trust him, yet we don’t listen.
Peter, the disciple who tried to walk on water and failed, gave his life to the Lord. Before Peter could act like Jesus he went through a transformation. In Peter’s earlier life, Peter renounced knowing Jesus in Jesus’ hour of desperation. Yet later he was able to heal a lame man in Jesus’ name. Peter eventually became the rock of the Christian Church. Peter’s transformation, from a man full of doubt to a strong Christian leader, is proof that God can make a weak indecisive man a servant of the Lord, full of strength and courage.
Jesus wants you to rest in his hands. Are you still hiding in the briar patch? Could we not serve the Lord better if we rested in Jesus’ hands?
