Who were the first to play this game? That would be Adam and Eve. Although, it wasn't played with as much enthusiasm as it is now. As soon as Adam and Eve disobeyed God's instruction to not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil the game began. Did they think that hiding from God after sinning would accomplish anything? It makes one wonder.
If you read in Genesis 3 you will find the account of their sin. You will also find that God was the ultimate "Seeker." When you played hide and seek when you were a child, was there always that one kid who ruined the game by always finding everyone within minutes? That kid always seemed to be in my game. It just wasn't fun unless it lasted longer than 5 minutes. God sure put a damper in Adam and Eve's game, and He did it rather quickly.
There are a few lessons we can learn from the account of Adam and Eve. First, when we sin the last thing we should do is hide from God. Sin will follow us and give us away just as a puppy will do the same when we are trying to hide and we can't shoo him away before the seeker finds us.
Two, God will drop everything to find us when we have gone astray. He is our Great Shepherd and he will seek until he finds. Besides, nothing gets past him.
Three, what seems like an innocent game can quickly turn into us baring our personal areas. It's not comfortable being naked in front of people. It's not supposed to be. God in all his humor made a clear point here. If we are obedient to his Word then we are fully clothed. If we sin, then God will strip us bare to show us that without him we have nothing but our physical shell of a body. It is only by God are we clothed in his righteousness. It is God who clothes us with His armor to fight the battles of sin.
In closing, leave the childish games in the past. Keep yourselves clothed in God's righteousness and his holy armor. And if you find yourself in a room all alone and naked then you might want to swiftly find out why and remedy it. Otherwise that room can quickly fill up with a crowd of people. Oh how embarrassing!
