“You should pick and freeze that broccoli today,” the wise one within me was saying. “You know it has been sitting in the garden for several days waiting to be processed.” But I didn’t want to listen to the wise one today. I wanted to listen to the other voice, the selfish one. It told me, “Today you can do whatever you want, no duties, no responsibilities, just have fun. If your broccoli goes bad, so what? Do what you want for once.”

I knew what I wanted to do instead. I want to climb a very special mountain whose peaks are high and majestic. Clouds swirl around them, sometimes veiling them, sometimes framing them. The view as I look up is inspiring, inviting, beckoning. I wanted to take up the challenge to reach the top. Those who have succeeded have become immortalized. Others look up to them and honor them, wishing they had what it takes. It’s not an easy journey. Yet I am driven to get to the top. Am I deluding myself with my dream to conquer this mountain? Maybe, but I will never know unless I try.

I have read all the “How To” manuals. I have taken classes to hone my skills. Now comes the doing. One step follows another.

And so I plod along, sentence-by-sentence, paragraph-by-paragraph, till I have conquered the mountain called, first place in The Writing Challenge.

The broccoli won’t get processed today.
