The room was quiet except for the ticking of the clock on the wall and the sound of pencil and eraser. The standard allotted fifteen minutes the testing manual suggested for finishing the math portion of the assessment was well past.
“Finish as many problems as possible. When they get too hard let me know. Remember this is a test to show how much you know and were you need more work. It will not be graded.”
The Christian life is a race full of challenges. Jessica faced this challenge head on.
Determination could be seen with each move of the pencil. It echoed in each swish of the eraser. Fifteen minutes turned into thirty, then forty. The test manual said to give adequate time for each student to work as many problems as possible. I wondered just how much time I should allow. But, I didn’t want to discourage such drive. At last she laid down the pencil and handed me her test form.
“I didn’t know how to do some of the problems so I left them blank.”
No regrets, no disappointment, just simple honesty.
Jessica struggles with math. She has struggled with math since the first day our home school curriculum introduced numbers. In the fall her home school journey turns onto the track through high school. Her neurologist encouraged us to have her tested for a math learning disability after Jessica shared with him her desire to go to college. A diagnosis is needed and documentation through high school to show the paper trail colleges expect.
The first step was the assessment just completed. In a few weeks Jessica will meet with a neuron-psychologist for more formal testing. I know she will show him the same determination.
My eyes felt moist as I scored the test. It confirmed that Jessica is four grade levels behind in math. What a challenge! But, Jessica isn’t going to give up. Neither is the teacher.
