A big dinner would be amassed for Emma’s arrival. The nursery was definitely a girly room. It was painted pinkest pink. Her dad had hand painted a beautiful white tree with pink blossoms in the corner of the nursery for his new granddaughter. The letters, EMMA were positioned evenly over the stark white crib. The crib’s bedding was delicate pink gingham.
Emma was arriving from China and Jenna would be absolutely crazy over her new baby sister. Jenna was 3 years old, and she was sitting at the kitchen table just finishing up her oats. “Emma going to like me.”
“Yes, she is.” Anna answered as she picked her up and gave her a big kiss.
The phone rang, it was dad, and he wanted to know if they needed to bring anything. Just bring yourselves was her reply.
As she hung up the phone, she thought about how wonderful her parents were about the whole adoption thing, especially her dad. She remembered the tears that welled up in his eyes when she first told him about the adoption. Her dad, being the strict military man that he was, didn’t allow tears to flow quickly, but he did seem to have a soft spot for children. In fact, little Jenna had already wrapped him around her little finger, now Emma, no doubt, would too.
Anna, Kevin and Jenna all hopped into their new SUV, equipped with two car seats. They would soon see little Emma in the flesh for the very first time. They had already seen plenty of photos, and she was beautiful. She had a head of hair that was coal black, a stark contrast to the red haired family on their way to pick her up.
When they arrived, Sadie and Tom, Anna’s parents were standing outside.
“Are you two ready?” Anna asked them.
“We’re are!”
Anna saw the tears in her dad’s eyes and she gave him a kiss on the cheek. “You’re such a softy!”
“He is that.” Her mother agreed.
The first day with Emma was wonderful. All of Anna’s friends from church had all of the food set up, and family and friends arrived all through the day to welcome Emma home.
Later that day, Sadie noticed that Tom had disappeared, she finally found him in one of the spare rooms. He was sobbing and he had the yellowed photograph in his hand. She had seen this scene many times before, and she knew it was inevitable today. The yellowed photograph was a younger version of Tom dressed up in his military uniform. He was knelt down in the picture and had his arms around a young boy, about the age of 2.
Sadie walked over and sat down by him on the bed. She put her arms around him and said, “I’m sure he is alright, Tom. Emma has found a good home, and I’m sure Teddy has to”.
He looked up at her with red, swollen eyes and answered, “I hope so, Sadie, I sure do hope so.”
