Most of you have probably experienced, “brain freeze,” at some time in your lives. It usually happens from eating ice cream too fast and it is a painful occurrence as I’m sure many of you would attest. I suffer daily from a different variation of, “brain freeze.” My affliction is one more of emotional pain than physical.
Every morning I turn on my computer, open a clean, blank, white page, say a little prayer, get ready to type a title, then it hits me, full force…”brain freeze.” Occasionally I’ll write something, but more often than not I’ll find myself with that same blank, white page staring back at me eight hours later.
I am a, “professional,” writer. I’ve been published in several small town newspapers and a few little known periodicals. I’ve never made a penny from anything I’ve written, which is good. It keeps me extremely humble. What makes me a, “professional writer”? I was hoping you’d ask.
I’ve been retired for several years now and a few physical ailments keep me close to home on most days. It’s these times that I’ll often spend the whole day thinking of something to write. I believe whatever a man does for eight hours a day makes him a professional.
It works for painters, mechanics, carpenters, and every other job title you can think of. I see no reason why it wouldn’t apply to me.
However, after agonizing over this project all week and just an hour away from my deadline, I’m no less, “brain frozen,” than after my first draft. My choices are two; #1…don’t submit anything at all, but that would make it easier to do the same next week. #2…submit this sad excuse for an article in the hope that it goes unnoticed by anyone who’s never had, “brain freeze.”

If the brain consumes no energy there can be no heat produced for the unfreezing. Besides, heat does not travel in a vacuum, my friend.
