Even though the weather is still hot and muggy, the feeling of autumn, which is my favorite time of year, is in the air. The back to school commercials we see during our favorite television programs spells out school, which means autumn is just around the corner.
Autumn will be bittersweet this year because of the big changes concerning school. Our youngest will be starting high school and our oldest will be starting college. The college and scholarship applications, the massive shopping spree that comes with filling a dorm room, stocking up on school supplies, the registration of courses and orientation dates have made the expectation of my favorite time of year overwhelming. Despite the fact that I’m looking forward to the cooler temperatures, the beautiful fall colors that only autumn brings and the anticipation of the holidays, I still can’t shake the overwhelming feeling of uncertainty. Even though I have tears in my eyes for both my girls, I know and pray that they will take these changes gracefully and make the best out of them. They have always been strong when it comes to something new.
The anticipations of this time of year for my youngest have been fearful, but she has kept her eyes on the important, fun things that starting high school will bring. She knows that her grades from now to her senior year will be extremely important when it’s her time to fill out those college and scholarship applications. As for the fun things, she is looking forward to the homecoming dance and getting her driver’s permit. The feelings of my oldest, however, have been quite different. She has been a little nervous about how hard the college courses will be, yet she is excited about all the friends she will make and the freedom she will experience. For these specific things, I am grateful, for I know it will make things easier for both of them.
As I get used to this change and fall into a normal rhythm of day to day life which I am looking forward to, as well as, autumn, I am reminded of Deuteronomy 31:8, And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed. (KJV) This is not only a special promise I feel that was written for me, but was also written for my girls. I know deep in my heart all these anticipations will turn into a stronger faith for all of us. Thanks to the promises of God.
