Maria Mitchell was preparing to join her husband, Carl, in Australia. There was so much to do and Maria had an energy that she had not had for a long time. A statuesque woman of fifty five, she had a presence. She got things done, but she had felt herself wearying of her daily tasks until she made the decision to leave her home of several years and join her husband. After lots of prayer, many long distance calls and talks to her lovely daughters she knew it was right to go. Not necessarily easy, but right
Maria rarely did what was easy. After Carl took his overseas position, Maria moved back to her home town. Being a woman of prayer she had asked God to show her how she could, “dispel the darkness” in His world during this period of her life. Before she knew it, she was involved in politics! She had bought a house in the historic district. Not long after moving in, there was a spike in the crime rate. Local leaders were reluctant to take action. Some of her neighbors asked Maria if she would run for a vacant seat on the city council. She ran, won and became a force for change. Although she was working for the good of her community, she had made some enemies. There would be some on the council who would be glad to see her go. She didn’t care. She knew she had done what she was meant to do.
She was excited to begin a new chapter in her life. She wanted to travel all over Australia visiting the towns, the desert of the Outback and the beaches. God was giving her another wonderful opportunity and she couldn’t wait to begin. She smiled as she recalled what Paul said in Philippians 4:11, “I have learned in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” She would change the word state to country and claim that. She would also claim verse 13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” She knew He was the only one she needed to please.
