I had no idea why we could not use the drive thru, but since Grandma was dozing in the passenger seat, I clunked out of the backseat in my Sunday finery (high heels are overrated). I clumped up to follow Grandpa across the parking lot.
“I think we need to let Grandma rest in the car. Besides, I always liked going in better,” he told me.
He held the door open for me and we went in.
“Hey, everyone, Wayne is here!” one of the workers called when he spotted us.
“Hi-ya, Wayne!” said all of the people at the counter.
I knew he had “Fat Day” every week, but how did all these people know him by name?
“You know what I want,” he winked at the girl behind the register.
She laughed and shook her head, inputting the orders for Grandpa and Grandma without asking.
“How is college going?” my grandpa asked, pulling out his well- worn coin purse and shiny wallet.
“I’ve been doing all right in my economics class since you’ve been praying for me. But the English is still getting to me.”
He proceeded to ask everyone questions about their personal lives, their kids, grandkids, even pets.
When we walked out of the restaurant Grandpa was his usual cheerful self. He talked about the troubles and successes of the people inside as I silently fidgeted over holding and smelling food that I could not eat yet.
The workers at McDonalds were all smiles now. Someone cared about them. Even with only a passing contact, they knew that my grandpa cared about them, he truly cared.

All joking aside, I love that you shared this idea about knowing the people we come in contact with on a regular basis. Definitely consider expanding this, but you did manage to show how his actions meant a whole lot more than just words, even without the extra details.
