One time we had come across quicksand behind our house. My older brother was the one to notice it first, as he took the plunge and then could not get out. We offered him branches to get out. What crazy things we did as children, but we met each challenge head on and knew who we were.
Once we had lit matches near a friend’s barn and the rest is history. Our whole party was responsible (all of us kids and some of the neighbor kids too), but no one said a thing.
One of us boys picked up a small poisonous red snake that was on the railroad tracks and it bit him. There wasn’t enough poison in this young snake to pose a threat.
We handled a lot of things in those days and were afraid of very little. Sure of ourselves, was putting it mildly. We had no choice; my parents were both working away from the home. We (the older ones of us) kept a pretty good eye on the littler ones.
When the littlest member of the family first came on the scene, we determined to show her the ropes. Before long she was making as much noise as any of the rest of us. She was a quick study.
My sister and I showed the world that we were not afraid of anything, as we appeared on the curb in front of our house in our birthday suits. Mom was called and told the news and came home promptly and scolded us, and dressed us in human attire once more.
Fearless and sure of ourselves, my sister and I swallowed some poison we found in the garage. It tasted terrible, so did the raw egg we were forced to take after the fact – doctor’s orders. Oh, and did I mention that we lived.
How we all seemed to make it all the way to man and womanhood is a puzzle to us all, but we knew what we wanted to do and we did it, with certainty.
