These stories were not quite so funny when they were happening. However, over the course of time, they gained momentum and took on a life of there own. There’s the time my husband had his Appendectomy and I became the designated driver to take him to his doctor appointments.
I was backing out of the driveway when he informed me that I had forgotten the chart where we kept track of his temperature…he had developed pneumonia after surgery. We were already running late, so I rushed inside to get the needed chart and hurried back to the car. Except, this time I didn’t exactly back out of the driveway, I accidentally put the car in drive and headed straight for the garage door. I didn’t run into the garage door, but I was so close that I doubt a blade of grass would have fit between the car bumper and the garage door. My adorable husband sat there and laughed so hard I thought he was going to bust his stitches. I didn’t find it one bit funny. Of course, now it is in his repertoire of favorite stories…and yes we have shared a laugh or two remembering that day.
One of his favorite stories is the day he came home from the office early. My project of the day was painting the dining room, which is visible from our front door. Our children were small at the time, so they were playing and watching me paint. When I heard the front door, I set the can of paint on top of the ladder, climbed down and decided to move the ladder closer to the wall. You guessed it, that can of paint toppled right off that ladder and onto my head the precise moment my darling husband walked into the room. Not only was he on the floor dissolved in laughter, the kids were right there with him.
One point in his favor, he did ask me, “are you, ha ha, are you, ha ha, okay?” I stood there with paint dripping down my hair and face.
This one goes way back, we had only been married a few months and had recently purchased our first home. I decided wallpapering couldn’t be all that hard. But, I tell you I could not get that paper to stick to the wall for anything. I had watched my husband paper our family room and I was doing the exact same thing he did. I cut the paper to fit, rolled it to the inside, and wet it the water tray. He came home that day and I was so upset. I told him what happened, he picked up a roll of paper, read it and when I saw the corners of his mouth turn up and his chest begin shaking, you know that quiet laugh people can do when their not quite sure if they should laugh or not?
“Did you read the instruction?” he said.
I hesitated not wanting to admit that I had not read them. “I just did what you did.”
I’m sure you have already figured it out, the instruction said to apply paste…it was not the prepasted kind that he had used.
Does it count that in-between laughing he gave me a hug and told me? “I love you.”
One of husband’s “terms of endearment for me” is “Lucy”…as in the show “I Love Lucy.” My sweet, sweet children have many of their own stories to tell.
One of daughters keeps saying, “One of these days I’m going to write a book about life with my mom.”
Some of these incidents happened more than thirty years ago, my husband, with more than his share of humor, loves retelling each one, again and again. I hate to admit it, but these things still happen, all too often. Thankfully, God has brought me to the place where I’m, usually, the first one to laugh at myself. However, my sense of humor is not honed to any great degree, given my choice between a good drama type movie and a great comedy; I’ll take the drama…thank you very much.

I am still smiling over all the chuckles you put to paper. Even if you were trying to be a practical joker, it wouldn't come out so funny. Thanks for adding your humor to my day, and for a sweet picture of the author.
A couple of misspellings: In the second paragraph "took on a life of there own" should be "their own." Toward the end "that quiet laugh people can do when their not quite sure" should be "they're." A few punctuation things.
But this was a good narration from someone who supposedly "did not get my fair share" of humor in life. Thanks for sharing.
