The first name that comes to mind as being an unsung hero is my mother. I’m sure many of you would say the same thing about your mother. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it hadn’t been for her self sacrificing spirit.
She was born in 1918 the middle child of a family of 17 children. Her family was poor, doing without most of the conveniences we have today.
Though Mom did not have opportunity to receive a formal education she learned many lessons from life experiences. Somehow she could make do with what was on hand and make us all laugh. She passed on many important lessons of life.
She always got us involved in some way in the many jobs that were crying to be done in a large family. Laundry day was a big day. You had to carry water, heat it in the stove, and then start the job. Clothes were hung outside, even in winter sometimes and most of them needed ironing. After this the water had to be carried outside. Just one of the chores that took up so much time years ago that now is done on the run.
Her big garden and all the hard work to fill the pantry for winter will always be remembered fondly. In doing these things she taught us to have pride in our work.
Mom was always there for us when we came home from school. Though she never had a chance to go to school for long, she made many sacrifices so we could do well. When extra time was needed for homework or studies she saw to it that my chores got done. What scrumptious meals she prepared especially for our school picnics.
Her sense of humor saw us through tough situations. Even in later years she continued to be a source of encouragement to others by her sense of humor and positive outlook on life.
My mother is best described as a “woman of prayer.” It was her prayers that, first of all, brought my dad to his knees before they were married. It was her prayers that did much to create a loving atmosphere at home. We knew that we had a praying mother supporting us. When my brother Jack told her he was going to the mission field she wasn’t surprised: she said she had given him to the Lord long ago.
Mom’s example in being hospitable has helped me greatly in extending a welcome to strangers in our home. So many times Sunday dinners or evening meals were shared with others. There was always enough for everyone. Those who didn’t have loved ones near at hand often became part of our family. These were rich times of blessing.
Upon her retirement it was great to see her continue to reach out to those around here and be able to lead some of them to the Lord she loved. Then when she spent her last days in the care home she was a delight for the nurses to work with her. She indeed left a legacy that I would like be able to copy. What a heritage I have.

Yours is a sweet story and tells us so much about your mother.
My suggestion is:
1) Describe your mom by "showing" her to the readers, using some of the five senses. You "told" us much about her. Try taking some of the statements and turn them into images.I think painting pictures would eliminate a few of the minor sentence structure problems I spotted.
Overall, your talent is evident. Keep witing!
