My life changed dramatically the day after my bar mtzvah.
There I was only recently turned 13, reading the Torah in the synagogue of Tarsus, and declaring publicly, "Today I am a man".
Even as I was entering the adult world, my mothers was tearfully packing my suitcase for Jerusalem.
Father said,"You have a fine mind, my boy, and you will make your mother proud. But never forget the honest work with your hands I have taught you in my shop. How to turn a piece of leather in your hands and see the strengths and weaknesses, so you can built a good tight tent which will keep a man warm and dry. Always remember you are a child of Abraham, and a born citizen of Rome."
Oh I liked Jerusalem, and I loved kindly, wise Gameliel. He had only one fear- that he in some way might find himself working against the will of the Almighty.
But then I saw the Light.
People would ask me how I became a christian. I told them it happened somewhere between my asking two questions, My first question was, "Who are you, Lord?" He said from that magnificent Light that he was Jesus, and that it was hard for me to kick against my conscience. By the time I asked the second question, "What would you have me to do?", I was already a believer. And that has totally changed my life.
All my prestige on earth is gone. I have started churches in many countries. I have been beaten, faced unbelievable hardships, but the presence of the Spirit of God with me has allowed me to sing harmony on hymns with Silas in jail at midnight.
In fact, I told in one of my letters, that the joy of the Lord is so strong in me, that I am sometimes beside myself, but I keep it down, so that I can teach the younger christians. I still have some work to do down here, but I cannot wait to go be with Jesus which is far better, and to know him then like he knows me now.
Well, I will talk to you again later, right now I am being chained to two new guards. It seems they found out the last two guards became christians.
