No, there was no public urination, nor were there any occurrences of jaywalking. Unfortunately, the infraction was a moving traffic violation. A very polite police officer with a very long arm issued a traffic citation for not turning right when required. Specifically, the violation was “failure to obey a traffic control signal requiring a right turn.”
By the way, do motorcycle traffic cops always patrol in pairs? I simply ask because not only did I fail to make the right turn, but, like the game Follow the Leader, the motorist behind me followed my lead. And wouldn’t you know it. There waiting patiently at their red light, to my right, was not one, but two motorcycle traffic cops -- one violation for each of them…how accommodating of us. Continuing on through the green light I held my breath and prayed that somehow they had been distracted. However, the jarring sound of the siren heralded my impending capture. With a motion to pull over by one of our finest it was clear that no miracle was forthcoming.
The officer requested my driver’s license and proof of insurance. He asked if I knew why I had been stopped. I confessed that I did in hopes that my second prayer for just a stern warning would be answered, but again no divine intervention. Information was recorded, instructions given, and soon I was on my way noting every traffic violation of my fellow motorists and wondering how their prayer life was?
In looking back that day was a first for me. Two separate tickets issued by two motorcycle cops and two prayers that were offered to God as a means of “getting off the hook.” Not good in both instances. To my chagrin the spiritual lesson was clear and strong. God is not to be used as a “get out of a fine card” and when laws are broken there are consequences. Those consequences are not set aside, but need to be satisfied despite any extenuating circumstances one may be experiencing. In this case the only person to blame was the one behind the steering wheel. I just wish the lesson hadn’t been so expensive.
Oh, well. I am the wiser and safer driver for valuable lessons that needed to be learned at a cost that will pay benefits to all. Besides now I have some great trivia icebreakers about fines that, who knows, may save somebody some money someday.
