Poetry
Softly Holdeth Me
Beneath His feet the poppies lie
In scarlet fields,
In agony of sorrows shall He reap,
Forsaken and for us alone held high,
Our future sealed,
And for His children still shall weep.
Upon a shadowed cross a man
With jagged crown,
No angel wings shall lift
Or sooth with balm,
Hears the heart cries of the centuries span
And casts them down
Upon the Son, the sacrificial Lamb.
The children’s cries have pierced His side
With rapier sword,
And crucifixion nails torn
Hands that healed,
The fragrance of forgiveness here shall hide
Whom He has called
To Him whose death becomes our shield.
The temple veil is rent in two
That all may come,
The children of the Father
Are made free,
From sin and death behold, He has made new,
The risen Son
Is come and softly holdeth me.
Beneath His feet the poppies lie
In scarlet fields,
The battle swords far flung,
The victories gone,
The power of the past is just good-bye
As morning yields,
To His command, a new day has begun.
