Early in the Bible God speaks of a garden. "The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it" Genesis 2:15 How we keep and till our faith lives is inspired by God, as long as we ask Him, and stay near him. It is as if God gives us each a plot of land and says, "Take care of it." When we seek God's will He shows us what to do with it. Each of us should have a unique garden.
A garden is like life itself. What we fill it with, how often we tend it and care for it, what it looks like to God is what matters to God. Also how it affects and impacts on other people, and what we do in it. It reflects how we love others as well as ourselves, and what God graciously gives us. America, North and South, Australia, Asia, Africa, and Europe are like lots of combined gardens made by the saints living there. Also other islands. People serving God cultivate beautiful gardens of great worth in God's sight. They are a pleasing aroma to God.
To be a good gardener you need plant and gardening knowledge. You need tools and practice. To be a follower of Jesus, God give gifts, talents, and opportunities. He gives us the Bible, the book of faith and knowledge. He gives us spiritual gifts, like tongues, prophecy, signs and wonders. He gives us ministries of service like intercession, writing and evangelism. The Bible and prayer are like tools, and so is evangelism and writing. Some gardens have beautiful flowers, trees and shrubs, all producing their best in season. Some trees are always at best, like conifers always staying green. Some flowers last only a short while. These are still more magnificent than anything man ever made. Jesus spoke of field flowers saying "Even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these." Matthew 6:29. In a garden we can surround ourselves with God's created things. They give life, colour, beauty, scent and interest. Gardens are places to both rest and toil. In life God gives us fruitful labour. Some combining faith with the secular. One way to keep our inner gardens in really good condition is to fast. Then "You will be like a well watered garden."Isaiah 58:11
