I confess wasted breath,
with empty heart, and blinded eye.
Your Spirit's eye sees me in death;
the Separation to fly.
I have no word, nor needed heart,
where I might turn You.
The strength not here; it had depart
I know I can't be true.
This once wise, now a fool,
what I had is lost.
My heart once held Your precious Jewel;
Your blood had been the cost.
Now I return to learn again,
as if I never knew.
Teach me, Lord, the holy refrain,
how to pray to You.
I ate Your word, found it sweet;
while bitter in my stomach.
Your mind and will has been my meat
for my spiritual gullet.
Now I wait for Your Spirit
to come and take me over.
To have Your presence, to be near it;
again be my soul's Lover.
Take my breath, with heart and eye,
for You make much with little.
Let me know the angel's sigh,
in this man so brittle.
I am here where You see;
surely You fill this place.
Grant me now my greatest need;
I wait to see Your face.
